When the drug maker Mylan Pharmaceuticals lost patent protection on the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in 2007, Pfizer Inc. decided to spin off its active ingredient business and start selling generic versions. The generic version, the generic version of Pfizer's Viagra, was sold to rival erectile dysfunction drugs such as Cialis and Levitra.
But as Pfizer’s sales soared, the drug maker sold the original Viagra and Cialis generic, the generic version of Pfizer’s Viagra, to competitors. The generic version, Viagra, was a little more expensive, and the company was forced to close its patent on it, which ended in 2006.
As a result, Pfizer was forced to close its patent on the original drug — the generic version of Viagra — until it could sell the original Viagra to rival Cialis. Cialis was the biggest-selling erectile dysfunction drug in history and has made more than $1 billion in sales since its patent was expiring in 2007.
Pfizer’s Viagra — which contains the same active ingredient as Cialis — was introduced as a treatment for angina, a heart condition caused by high blood pressure.
The drugmaker plans to file for a generic version of Viagra later this year, and it is expected to begin selling the generic version of the drug this year. Pfizer’s Viagra, however, is a product of the company, and it has lost patent protection. A generic version will be the best-selling drug in the history of generic drugs.
Ibéna Démazé, senior vice president of research and development at Mylan, said Pfizer is committed to pursuing the generic version of Viagra in the coming years and “has a long history of producing innovative drugs that have the potential to revolutionize our health care system.”
Mylan also is launching its generic version of Viagra as a direct competitor to Cialis in the U. S. The generic drugmaker has already sold its active ingredient in Cialis to rival erectile dysfunction drugs such as Levitra and Viagra. Cialis is the brand name for tadalafil.
Mylan said it has been involved in negotiations with the patent holder over Viagra’s generic version of the drug. It has been in talks about a deal with Pfizer, but has not yet reached an agreement with the patent holder. Pfizer said in a statement that the deal “is not considered a license agreement.”
“This is the first time we have negotiated a license with Pfizer and have entered into a licensing agreement with the patent holder,” said Lesley Anne Cohen, senior vice president of global pharmaceutical affairs for Pfizer. “Pfizer is committed to fulfilling this licensing agreement and will continue to market our brand, and we are looking forward to working with the patent holder to ensure the successful commercialization of our drugs.”
Cohen said Pfizer also plans to file for a generic version of Viagra and sell the generic version to rival erectile dysfunction drugs. Viagra’s generic version will be available to patients by the end of this year. Pfizer is currently in the process of filing a generic version for Viagra in the U. and in Canada.
